Marie Moreau's hemokinesis manifests during her first period, accidentally killing her parents and straining her relationship with her sister Annabeth. Eight years later, Marie is accepted into Godolkin University, a school for training superheroes, and befriends Emma Meyer on her first day. Luke Riordan, the top student, commits suicide using his pyrokinesis after killing Professor Brink and going on a rampage, but Marie is given sole credit for stopping him and becomes the first freshman in the top 10 rankings.

Andre and Cate discover a secret recording revealing that Sam, Luke's brother, is held in a hidden facility called 'the Woods', secretly run by Dean Shetty. Emma infiltrates the Woods for Andre and speaks with Sam, but security responds and she hides after killing a guard. Sam recovers, slaughters guards, and escapes with Emma, intending to kill psychologist Dr. Edison Cardosa.

Marie blacks out and wakes up in Rufus's bedroom as he attempts to rape her; Jordan intervenes and Marie detonates Rufus's penis. Tek Knight forces Marie to reveal Jordan's involvement in Luke's suicide during his interrogation. Marie blacks out again after subduing Sam and awakens to find herself in bed with Jordan.

Cate confesses to using her tactile mind control to make Luke forget Sam and to erase memories from the group, restoring Andre's memories. Cate's overuse of her power traps Marie, Jordan, and Andre inside her mind, where they relive memories and learn about Shetty's experiments. Sam confronts Cate, but Emma talks him down; Cate reveals Shetty used Sam to augment Luke's powers and experiments on children. Cardosa tests his virus on an electrokinetic girl named Betsy, weakening her powers and killing her; Shetty asks to make it contagious.

Marie and Jordan break into Shetty's office and present evidence to Victoria Neuman, learning Shetty's family died in a plane crash caused by Homelander. Cate forces Shetty to reveal the truth behind the Woods and then makes her commit suicide. Cardosa gives Neuman a virus sample before she kills him to prevent his knowledge from spreading. Cate and Sam free the remaining captives from the Woods and lead them in killing non-Supes across campus. Andre learns Polarity's seizure was due to brain damage from his powers and takes on the Polarity mantle to fight rampaging supes. Marie detonates Cate's left arm during the fight, and Homelander accuses Marie of attacking her own kind before using heat vision on her. Marie, Jordan, Emma, and Andre are blamed for the attack while Sam and Cate are hailed as 'Guardians of Godolkin'; the group ends up in a sealed hospital room.
